The origins of settlement in Plainfield date back to the 1680’s when it was known for the many hatteries operating along the Green Brook. In 1869 after direct rail service was established with New York City, it became one of the first bedroom communities. It was also one of the wealthier railroad suburbs, as can be seen today from the scale of the houses. In just the Van Wyck Brooks historic district, over 100 millionaires are supposed to have lived there. Today Plainfield is a bustling suburban city “hamlet” situated twenty-six miles southwest of New York City. The area offers a unique combination of stately living, New Jersey history, arts and science in an environment that encourages exploration and innovation, and fosters family living. Primarily a residential, suburban community with limited industrial activity, Plainfield features a number of historic districts and beautifully restored homes. New construction is available in both single-family and multi-family dwellings, but Plainfield is noted for its variety of fine older homes.
